A woman in a blue silk dress slipped off both shoulders and fastened by three pearl buttons down the front, standing very close to a man in a dark jacket whose raised hand stops just short of touching her, their faces almost meeting, a dark restaurant behind them.
She wore the blue one.

ディナー中ずっと、店が火事になっても私たちは動かなかっただろう。

彼女はあの青いやつを着ていた——八か月前、結婚式で私が話した、彼女が覚えていてくれたあの服。ボタンが三つ。それだけだ。三つのボタンが、私とこの先の人生を隔てていた。

ワインが空になった。皿が下げられた。ウェイターがデザートを勧めてきた——目の前の状況をわかっていながら、気づかないふりをする分別を持つ男の辛抱強さで。

彼女は言った。「外まで送って」

私は彼女を外まで送った。

タクシーは十四分かかった。数えていた。
